ABOUT US

Our boutique business, Safar Traveller, came about when I Bharati Wadhwani, a hospitality and tourism graduate from Switzerland, partnered with my father Ravi Wadhwani, a seasoned safari expert, to curate bespoke travel journeys around India and Africa. My professional skills and his on-ground experience of three decades, tempered by our common love of travel, wildlife, entertaining and people resulted in one specific objective: to ensure that we cater to the “type” of people who hire us. Meaning, we love the beautiful wild, but we also know how to translate it for different tastes. The word Safari has its origins in the Arabic word safariya. The derivative in swahili, Safari, means “to travel” or to journey. By working closely with experienced safari specialists, we are able to curate adventures for individuals and small groups escaping to the wild from every corner of the world. The itineraries we create are completely bespoke. Your budget, your style, your pace. We are based in New Delhi but we are in and out of Africa every year checking out new properties and revisiting older ones. Many of the guides, camps, hotels and agencies we work with in both continents are pioneers in the safari industry, and also personal friends of ours. Seeing as we are in Africa so much, in 2015 we built our own family tent right on the banks of the Mara river ideally located to witness the wildebeest migration in Kenya between July and September.

about safar traveller

BHARATI WADHWANI

Managing Partner, Safar Traveller

Book with: bharati@safartraveller.com

“Most people travel for either work or pleasure. For me it’s always both together,” says 34-year-old Bharati, aka Bitsy, a hospitality and tourism grad from Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland, with work experience in Bangkok, Mauritius, and New Delhi with the Marriott, Oberoi and Aman Resorts, respectively.

Her first African safari was in 2008 and she’s gone back every single year since culminating in a year spent in working in Kenyan camps to understand the Safari business in detail. Thereafter she joined Wildspace, a boutique travel business in Delhi for three years.

Bitsy’s really good at Finding the best camps in the best locations, with a great wildlife experience while respecting your budget. On top of that, she’s all organized and pays attention to details. Which makes her a particularly suited to organizing family safaris and honeymoons in complicated travel destinations like India and Africa. She will also give you her personal recommendations for interesting things to do or places to shop and eat, being in love with food and wine herself, with a minor addiction to tribal jewellery and African art. Read Bharati’s Q&A on Nicobar’s fashion blog, and her safari packing guide.

RAVI T. WADHWANI

Safari Consultant, Photographer, Author

Consult with: ravi@safartraveller.com

Though he spent most of his life working as a businessman in Europe co-founding MEXX, an international brand for young fashion, Ravi retired in 1991 at the age of 41, moved back to India and begun travelling to Africa. Now in his sixties he divides his year between the two continents.

The photographer’s travels have taken him from the Cape to Kilimanjaro, from the Serengeti to the Skeleton Coast and along the way he has garnered an intimate sense of Africa’s wildlife and its ways.

Taking photographs of African game and landscapes added an exciting dimension to the lensman’s travel experience. Since 1994, the author has taken his camera on over seventy trips to ten countries in sub-saharan Africa teaching himself, along the way, the art of photography in the magical dark and light of the plains. This culminated in the book Safar, An Indian In Africa.

He has also written for several magazines, created the Safar Art Collection in collaboration with artist Anthony Russell and acted as a safari travel guide and consultant to friends of all stripes — from delicate city slickers to luxury seekers to the more wild and adventurous at heart. Watch the making of the Safar Art Collection Read about Ravi’s great adventures in Condé Nast Traveller.
