KENYA

Kenya is, in our opinion, the first stepping-stone in what will hopefully be your long innings of African Safaris. Here the offers range from top-of- the-line lodges and camps to the more reasonable, budget ones. Being a pioneer in wildlife tourism there are many options to suit your individual requirements. People tend to equate Kenya with the Wildebeest Migration and crossing of the Mara River, which occurs from the months of July to September. This is a mistake. While undoubtedly this is a spectacle and a natural wonder, it also means that one is traveling in peak season with its inevitable rush and high prices. Kenya is a large country and from north to south there are many options, which can be visited round the year. Inevitably, while one does end up in the Masai Mara due to its prolific game viewing however, there are several parts of Kenya including its spectacular coast that warrant a visit. So plan carefully and try not to cram it all in one visit. There is so much to come back to!!!

TRAVELLER INFORMATION

WHEN TO GO: In our opinion, Kenya is a year-round Safari destination. It really comes down to your interests, where & when you want to visit and the weather. Please note that weather patterns across Africa are becoming increasingly unpredictable due to global warming.

WEATHER

  • Located close to the equator, Kenya has a tropical and pleasant climate throughout the year.
  • It does not experience extreme weather or a summer/winter however there is a wet and dry season. There are regional temperature variations such as altitude and the monsoon winds, which determine the start of the rains. The coast is also warmer and humid throughout the year.
  • June & July are usually the coldest and least humid months.
  • Less rain is experienced during this time. Skies are clear, days are sunny, (low to mid 20°C) and it is considered to be “peak tourist season”. A good time for both Safaris and the coast. Early mornings/evenings tend to cool down to around 10°C. September & October gets warmer.
  • November can be unpredictable with downpours in the afternoons/evenings. However this does not affect your safari too much. Sea conditions/water clarity are not ideal at the coast.
  • December to February dries up a little however this is unpredictable.
  • March to May usually experiences the most rain on a daily basis. It’s cloudy and humid and some camps/lodges are closed.
