ZAMBIA

Zambia is a destination for the serious wildlife enthusiast. It’s not so easy to get to it and does not get the heavy tourist traffic of its more illustrious neighbours, Botswana and Zimbabwe. This relative isolation makes for great encounters with the big five and other game. South & North Luangwa, Kafue National Park and the Lower Zambezi are some of the better areas for wildlife and birding. Its many rivers offer great cruises albeit of the more personal kind. And then of course there are The Victoria Falls. This is a trip by itself. It is strategically based at the junction, between Zimbabwe and Botswana and well connected to all the major destinations of Southern Africa. The Victoria Falls can be seen both from Zambia and Zimbabwe (we can arrange safaris and visits to the falls from this side as well). There is also the possibility of flying over the falls by microlight or helicopter, which is quite breathtaking. If you are the sporty type do whitewater rafting on the Zambezi. Imagine crocodiles and Hippos as companions if you fall off!!!

TRAVELLER INFORMATION

WHEN TO GO: In our opinion, Zambia is a year-round Safari destination. It really comes down to your interests, where & when you want to visit and the weather. Please note that weather patterns across Africa are becoming increasingly unpredictable due to global warming.

WEATHER

  • Zambia has a tropical climate with a good amount of rainfall throughout the year.
  • There is a Dry Season (May-October) and a Wet Season (November-April).
  • The most popular time for safaris is during the dry season as many camps close down during the wet months as they become inaccessible. The Southern Parks can be visited throughout the year.
  • A good time to see Victoria Falls is from June through September.
May to August (Cool dry season)
  • There is little rainfall during this time and humidity is low. It is considered to be “peak tourist season”.
  • Temperatures are lower, 10(°c) in the mornings/evenings, and pleasant 23-25(°c) in the daytime. Parks at lower altitudes and the lower Zambezi will be warmer.
 September/October (hot dry season)
  • Afternoon temperatures increase gradually to 30+(°c) and October is the hottest month. In some areas temperatures will go up to 40°c and humid.
  • The rains start by November but its unpredictable. Showers can be experienced in the afternoons. Temperatures are pleasant in the mornings 18(°c) and go up to 30(°c) in the daytime.
  • December to April will have the max amount of rain. You can expect torrential downpours in the afternoons with temperatures around 26-28°c and high humidity.

GETTING THERE

Most Safaris start from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (15km from Lusaka) or Mfuwe International Airport. If you’re visiting Victoria Falls, you will most likely fly in or out of Livingstone Airport. We do not book international flights however, we will suggest the very best arrival/departure options, which work with your itinerary. We would be happy to book all of your transport, flights and charters for you (within Zambia) so that everything else is taken care of from the time you land until you depart.

VISAS

Entry requirements can change. All visitors should check with their local embassy/consulate or travel agent to verify the updated requirements and apply well in advance. Most countries require an e-visa for entry into Zambia. For more information regarding e-visas and a list of exempted countries please visit: http://evisa.zambiaimmigration.gov.zm/ there is also the Kaza Visa for travellers visiting both Zambia and Zimbabwe.

VACCINATIONS

If you are travelling from anywhere infected with Yellow Fever, you must have a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate. Otherwise, no other immunizations are required. All visitors should check with their local embassy/consulate or their travel agent for complete and up-to- date information.
