TANZANIA

The country Tanzania immediately conjures up images of its famous wildlife attractions. Namely, the popular northern safari circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara and Tarangire). However if you are a serious photographer and enjoy wilder places, southern Tanzania or the remote western Tanzania are worth a visit. Some camps here all still ‘old school’ with lanterns and bucket showers. Mostly flush toilets have crept in but that doesn’t take away from being in real, wild, Africa. Safaris usually start from Kilimanjaro International Airport or Dar-es- Salaam. You should try to plan well in advance if you want to save some money or if you wish to combine Tanzania with another East African country. Scheduled flights are not every day and getting between its neighboring countries (by road) might not be as easy as you think, as we have learnt the hard way! If you have the time you could drive but this is for the brave and well-versed 4xw drive adventurer. Or you could climb Kilimanjaro, which is on many peoples bucket list. There are seven official trekking routes to choose from depending on your level of experience. A great way to end your safari is with a few nights on the coast. Exploring the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia Archipelago offering some great diving, snorkeling, water sports and a choice of boutique hotels and villas to stay.

TRAVELLER INFORMATION

WHEN TO GO: In our opinion, Tanzania is a year-round Safari destination. It really comes down to your interests, where & when you want to visit and the weather. Please note that weather patterns across Africa are becoming increasingly unpredictable due to global warming.

WEATHER

  • Located close to the equator, Tanzania has a tropical and pleasant climate throughout the year.
  • It does not experience extreme weather or a summer or winter however there is a wet and dry season. There are regional temperature variations such as altitude and the monsoon winds, which determine the start of the rains. The coast is also warmer and humid throughout the year.
  • The western and southern parts are also warmer but not as humid.
  • June & July are usually the coldest and least humid months.
  • There is little rainfall during and humidity is low.
  • It is considered to be “peak tourist season” and a good time for both Safaris and the coast.
  • Afternoons are warm and sunny between 20-30(°c), cooling down slightly in the evenings/mornings down to around 10-12°C. However this varies depending on location and altitude.
  • September & October warms up.
  • Daytime temperatures are in the low 30s°c throughout the season. Colder at higher altitudes and the northern circuit parks.
  • November and sometimes you can expect short afternoon rain showers however this doesn’t usually interfere with your safaris.
  • December - February there is a short break in the rain but it is often unpredictable.
  • The max rain is from March to May. Where it tends to rain everyday especially in the north and humidity is higher.
